QUANTUM3D AND UNITED DEFENSE ANNOUNCE SUCCESSFUL DEVELOPMENT OF BRADLEY A3 EMBEDDED TRAINING SYSTEM
Unique Training System Features Quantum3D's Sentiris PMC Realtime Graphics Subsystem To Support Commander and Gunner Training

Bradley A3

ORLANDO, Fla. - December 2, 2002 - Quantum3D®, Inc. and United Defense, announced today at I/ITSEC that they have successfully implemented an embedded training application for the Bradley A3 Fighting Vehicle. The application features the Quantum3D Sentiris™ COTS PCI Mezzanine Card (PMC), the most advanced embedded graphics subsystem available today based on NVIDIA® Quadro®4 Graphic Processing Units (GPU) technology. Quantum3D solutions for embedded training are on display at the company's I/ITSEC booths (No. 1220 and 852). The Bradley A3 Embedded Trainer is on display in the United Defense Booth (No.1370)

The Bradley A3 Embedded Training Program represents a growing trend in military training focused on embedding high fidelity, synthetic environment training capabilities directly into combat platforms to enable soldiers to practice a range of essential combat/engagement activities as well as rehearse actual mission scenarios in advance of operations, all while deployed to the field.

Doing so enables soldiers to augment skills-based training received in institutional and live training environments as well as rehearse for specific engagements and missions. Until the advent of Sentiris, the size, power, weight and cost of realtime visual computing platforms necessary to conduct high fidelity embedded training precluded actual deployment.

New Bradley A3 Embedded Trainer

The United Defense Bradley A3 program provides embedded training capabilities for both commander and gunner positions within the vehicle. United Defense integrated two Sentiris PMCs with VME form factor COTS single board computers (SBCs) to support independent 360-degree synthetic battlefield views for the two sighting systems. Current training capabilities include support for multiple, concise mission scenarios as well as "free-play" with multiple targets and a range of terrains and weather and lighting conditions that help to enhance vehicle crew readiness. The system features an open architecture that supports existing SEDRIS and OpenFlight™ ground vehicle databases, which enables the reuse of U.S. Army data assets as well as enables combined arms tactical training. To date, over sixty U.S. Army gunners have successfully completed orientation training on the embedded trainer.

"We have a no compromise approach to embedded training at United Defense that requires deployed environments to have fidelity as close to reality as space, power and weight will enable," said Mark Russell, Manager, Simulation and Training Systems Group, United Defense. "The Sentiris PMC with NVIDIA GPU technology gives us the best performance in the industry, compatibility with our existing mil-spec VME computing environment, and a straightforward path for P3I that gives both our customers and us a path for the future."

"Embedded training is an increasingly important initiative within the US and allied military organizations, and Quantum3D has focused a significant amount of its resources on this growing market by developing COTS realtime graphics subsystems like Sentiris that combine the performance, mil-spec ruggedization, image quality, power efficiency and open architecture that are essential for these applications," said Ross Q. Smith, Quantum3D co-founder and executive vice president of marketing and business development. "We're extremely pleased to be a part of the United Defense effort to bring high fidelity training to the Bradley A3 and we look forward to helping United Defense as it continues to enhance the fidelity of the system and transition the program into production."

Sentiris PCI Mezzanine Card (PMC)

Sentiris PMC
Quantum3D's Sentiris is the first PMC that brings the power of NVIDIA GPU technology to COTS embedded visual computing applications. Based on NVIDIA's Quadro4 Embedded GPU, Sentiris delivers higher performance and better image quality than any PMC available in the market today-with line, point and polygon primitive and full scene anti-aliasing and texture mapping performance that surpasses other PMCs based on competitive graphics chipsets. Sentiris supports NVIDIA's unique nView™ architecture, which provides dual, independent outputs-with both digital (LVDS/DVI) and analog outputs at up to 2048 x 1536 resolution with 32-bit color and Z-buffering. For sensor, camera and other advanced video I/O functions, Sentiris also includes advanced video-in and video-out capabilities, with intrinsic support for color space conversion, scaling and overlays, for popular video formats including NTSC, PAL, S-Video and RS-170A.

Designed for open architecture applications, Sentiris supports both Intel® IA32™ and PowerPC® architecture systems under Microsoft® Windows® (IA32 only), Linux and popular real time operating system (RTOS) environments. Sentiris is compliant with IEEE P1381.1 and is compatible with VME, CompactPCI and virtually all other single board computers equipped with IEEE P1381.1 compliant PMC connectors. Sentiris takes advantage of the Quadro4's PowerMizer™ technology to deliver unsurpassed graphics performance with power consumption and thermal dissipation that is typically less than 10 Watts-a power and thermal envelope previously limited to simple frame buffer technologies. Convectively cooled models of Sentiris™ are available from Quantum3D and its distributors. Conductively cooled Sentiris™ models (per VITA 20-199x) are available via SBS Technologies (www.sbs.com). Sentiris is also designed to meet the rigorous shock and vibration requirements of Mil-Std-810E and EMI/EMC requirements of Mil-Std-461D, which makes it perfect for the hostile environments found in deployed ground vehicle, marine, avionics and man-portable applications.

Sentiris' underlying Quadro4 graphics technology is the most powerful embedded graphics processor ever developed. Equipped with a 128-bit wide interface to 64MB of high-performance frame buffer/texture memory, the Quadro4 is capable of delivering up to 2.8 million anti-aliased lines per second, and up to 358 trilinear Megapixels/sec, which surpasses its nearest competitor by a factor of up to 10x.
