BALTIMORE, MD - June 28, 2005 - Quantum3D®, Inc., a leading provider of open architecture, realtime 3D visual computing solutions for the Visual and Sensor Simulation Training (VSST) and Embedded Visual Computing (EVC) markets, and Kutta Consulting, a leading edge research and development firm, today announced at AUVSI their collaboration on three Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contracts for applications of PDA-based Human Machine Interface (HMI) applications. Under the terms of the contracts, Kutta Consulting has selected Quantum3D's IData® ES HMI tools, which now are available with OpenGL® ES support and professional services for the following SBIR efforts:
- Dismounted Associate - a U.S. Army Phase II SBIR program to provide a handheld UAV command and control capability on a PDA platform. The program offers smart autoroute features, a soldier-friendly user interface, and an advanced HMI based on IData's OpenGL ES render engine running on integrated mobile graphics accelerator technology. Live, texture based video, 3D route displays, and innovative rastor/vector interactive moving map capabilities, all running at user interactive frame rates, are key Quantum3D contributions to this effort.
- Distributed UAV Access System - a U.S Air Force Phase I SBIR aimed at providing a collaborative environment running across multiple classes of platforms for the gathering and exploitation of sensor data from UAVs. IData's ability to seamlessly transition between handheld, tablet, portable, and desktop environments was a key factor in its selection for this effort.
- Handheld Personal Flight Test Data Recorder - another Phase I Air Force SBIR leveraging PDA technology, advanced sensors and algorithms, and innovative user interfaces to supply a carry-on/carry off flight data recorder with integrated test pilot display capabilities. Quantum3D's extensive experience in advanced user interfaces, avionics displays, and lightweight embedded applications were important to this SBIR win.
Key to each of these SBIR wins is IData ES, IData's powerful new Render Engine for OpenGL ES environments. IData is the first HMI tool on the market to offer support for OpenGL ES, the widely-adopted industry standard for highly embedded mobile visual computing platforms. Developed by the Khronos Group (www.khronos.org), OpenGL ES employs a subset of the OpenGL API to provide accelerated 2D/3D rendering functionality for mobile phones, PDAs, set-top boxes, safety-critical embedded systems, and a wide range of highly embedded environments. With IData ES, IData's Dynamic Bytecode databases transition seamlessly from desktop OpenGL environments to these highly constrained environments, extracting maximum performance from limited resources. The resulting combination of advanced graphics, powerful HMIs, and low-cost graphics acceleration provide a watershed in price/power/performance for embedded systems. Quantum3D is demonstrating IData ES on a ruggedized PDA at AUVSI Booth 1339.
Kutta's broad engineering background and subject matter expertise are well-matched to Quantum3D's knowledge and experience. Kutta offers algorithmic expertise, application development know-how, and an incisive technology development process to ensure America's warfighters will be equipped with the best technology. Quantum3D's broad experience in advanced HMIs, avionics, safety critical systems, and military visualization provide key components for Kutta's team.
"Quantum3D is thrilled to be working with Kutta to advance embedded HMI and rendering technology to serve American and allied military and first responders", said Ross Q. Smith, Quantum3D president and co-founder. "The combination of Kutta's industry-leading expertise in these mission critical applications, coupled with the unique performance, flexibility and portability features of IData ES results in an exceptionally powerful and cost effective solution set for military and civilian personnel who need realtime visual computing capabilities in the most portable package possible."
"Kutta is utilizing the IData toolset to quickly prototype displays for use in its SBIR projects," said Douglas Limbaugh, Kutta's CEO and co-founder. "The IData toolset enables us to quickly build user interfaces and evaluate them from a human factors standpoint, allowing us to bring our products to market faster. The quality of graphics we are building into our products using the IData toolset to utilize OpenGL ES on small computing platforms is absolutely amazing."
