San Jose, CA, February 8, 2000
- Quantum3D® Inc., the leader in PC-based visual computing
systems, announced today that Doron Precision Systems, Inc., Binghamton,
NY, selected the company's Quicksilver II visual computing
systems for their newest line of police officer driver training
simulators. Doron's AMOS (Advanced Mobile Operations Simulator)
is the first such system approved by California Peace Officers
Standards and Training (POST) for use by police departments in
the State of California.
Local, county, and state police agencies use
the AMOS systems for police tactical training exercises. Each
AMOS is a single operator unit that allows drivers to interact
with other vehicles in a synthetic environment, with 65 driving
scenarios approved by California POST. With built-in networking
support, multiple AMOS units can be linked to create realtime
driving scenarios where cooperation, teamwork and tactical procedures
for preventing a pursuit or, if necessary, initiating a safe pursuit,
are practiced in the safety of the simulators. These cost-effective
simulators enable police officers to train more efficiently and
be better prepared for real-life emergency situations, improving
driver reaction and reducing the risk of injuries or deaths. The
AMOS provides a dynamic training environment for a wide variety
of agencies and organizations, and the simulator is easily adapted
to any ground vehicle application, whether military or civilian.
The AMOS is Doron's newest and most advanced
mobile operation simulator. Employing the Quicksilver II, the
new system has a significantly enhanced visual system that provides
clear, sharp, enriched graphics. Five channels or monitors per
seat provide a full, undistorted 225o field of view, including
mirrors, that allows drivers to have a panoramic view of an enlarged
environment. The environment includes realistic building detail,
divided highways, and interstate highways with elevated interchanges
plus textured and realistic vehicles.
"We chose Quantum3D because of the quality
of their graphics subsystems and the ruggedness of their computers,"
said Kenneth Kittinger, Doron Senior Vice President.
"Doron is the recognized world leader in
the development and manufacture of driving simulation systems,"
said Rick Bess, Vice President of Business Development and Marketing
at Quantum3D. "Their adoption of Quicksilver II as the best
platform for AMOS is further confirmation of Quantum3D's abilities
to deliver systems that meet the needs of the widest range of
visual simulation and training applications. Quicksilver II is
a ruggedized, open architecture, scalable system, designed to
deliver the best possible performance in simulators for either
visual simulation and training or for advanced entertainment applications."
Doron also employs critical components of the
Quicksilver II, including Quantum3D's Obsidian® 200SBi-8440
graphics subsystem, and OpenGVS scene management software,
as well as their own scene manager. Other software includes MultiGen
Creator as the modeler, with Microsoft® Windows NT®
as the operating system.
