LIDAR Fusion Tool Suite

Overview

The LIDAR Fusion Tool Suite provides the user with the ability to visualize, align, combine, correct, and analyze LIDAR sensor point cloud data, and automatically convert the point cloud into a polygonal synthetic environment database in standard VISSIM formats such as Shape and OpenFlight®. The LIDAR Fusion Tool Suite, developed by Quantum3D’s subsidiary CG2, is derived from the successful commercialization of a NAVAIR SBIR aimed at providing LIDAR data as a new source for VISSIM utilization. The versatile resulting product has expanded in scope to address the needs of not only the VISSIM market, but also the mission rehearsal community, the GEOINT community, sensor developers, and LIDAR data providers.

The LIDAR Fusion Tool Suite includes four key components:

LIDAR Fusion Registration

It provides the user with the ability to correct errors in position and orientation for each LIDAR scan.

LIDAR Fusion Viewer

A GUI application that provides a complete 3D visualization of the point cloud data. Imagery can be displayed with the point data.

LIDAR Fusion Interpreter

The backbone of the system. It identifies and separates the terrain skin from the unified point cloud, then clusters the remaining points into features and classifies the features (e.g. buildings) and subcomponents (e.g. wall).

LIDAR Fusion DBGS

It takes the data created by the LIDAR Fusion Interpreter and formats it as OpenFlight®, Shapefiles, and Bare Earth DEM files accordingly. Each of these data files can be fed into traditional COTS DBGS tools, such as Terrex TerraVista, to product simulation databases that can run on most Image Generator.

Applications

The LIDAR Tool Suite has a modular design, allowing the product to address a variety of customer needs:

sensor and sensor data developers
Sensor and Sensor Data Developers

The point cloud visualization and editing features are useful to sensor data providers and sensor developers (such as Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control) to evaluate the performance of new sensors in development.

Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT)
Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT)

The point cloud visualization display options and analysis features can provide the geo-intelligence community with a rapid means to evaluate a scene from a raw LIDAR point cloud scan.

Visual Simulation Training and Mission Rehearsal
Visual Simulation Training and Mission Rehearsal

The point cloud conversion to VISSIM formats has provided a new LIDAR data source for simulation and training as well as mission rehearsal.   The rapid generation of geospecific IG scene content exceeds anything that can be accomplished with traditional methods using only a fraction of the time.

Features and Benefits

Point Cloud Visualization
  • Load view multiple overlapping point clouds containing millions of points and view the unified result in full 3D with true interactive speed.
  • Augment the point cloud scene with a variety of texture, color, and shading options.
Point Cloud Editing
  • Correct geospatial alignment errors between point cloud scans
  • Align the unified point cloud with other geospecific sources, such as satellite imagery
  • Filter erroneous data points
Point Cloud Analysis
  • Have the process automatically identify, isolate, and highlight features within the point cloud, including terrain, buildings and trees
  • Have the process automatically derive the location of polygonal surfaces within the point data
Point Cloud Conversion
  • Export the unified, analyzed point data into a VISSIM standard format (OpenFlight®, Shape, DEM)
  • This completely automated conversion process can generate terrain with thousands of geospecific features in a matter of minutes. This automatic process will:
    • Isolate the terrain and fill in any gaps where features were removed
    • Construct the exact building geometry and apply geospecific rooftop texture from the corresponding satellite / areal imagery, and apply user selectable generic wall textures
    • Scale and position trees according to their real world location and size as derived from the actual LIDAR scan
  • o Exported data is import compatible with most of today’s VISSIM Image Generators, Database Generation Editors, and DoD archive standards (SECORE, CDB, NPSI, SEDRIS)
